Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, a nerve extending from the forearm to the hand, is compressed inside the wrist. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway inside the wrist that houses the median nerve and 9 flexor tendons of the hand. Every time you bend your wrist, the median nerve is squeezed and you experience tingling, numbness and eventually pain. With the added pressure from the nerve, the tendons inside the carpal tunnel begin to rub and become inflamed. You know this is happening because every wrist movement hurts. Once these tendons become inflamed it is very difficult to recover 100%, especially when you can’t get a good night’s sleep to allow your body to heal. Even if you could sleep soundly, it is almost impossible to keep from re-straining the tendons with all the wrist movements we make in a day.
Ironically, when the pain is gone and you feel like moving your wrist again, the tendons feel healed, but they are not. Just after the pain stops, the inflammation is reduced and the tendons are better but not all better. It takes more time yet for them to fully heal. You want to use your wrist but you shouldn’t. It's not your fault though. It's just not possible to stop everything and rest your wrist properly and without help, the tendons take too long to heal.
